I am going to be honest with you. I bought this watch mostly because I was tired of charging my old smartwatch every single night like it was a needy houseplant. The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar basically solved that problem by making battery life a non-issue. In smartwatch mode with enough sun exposure, Garmin claims unlimited battery life. I have gone over three weeks without charging it. Three weeks. My phone cannot make it through a Tuesday.

But the battery is just the headline. This thing is genuinely built for dads who actually do stuff outside. The case is a fiber-reinforced polymer that feels like it could survive a lawnmower encounter. The screen is protected by Corning glass. I have banged it on door frames, scraped it against playground equipment, and worn it through every kind of yard work imaginable. Not a scratch.

GPS tracking is accurate and locks on fast. Heart rate monitoring works well enough for my purposes, which is mostly confirming that chasing a toddler around a park does in fact count as cardio. It tracks runs, bikes, swims, hikes, and about forty other activities I will never do. The body battery feature is surprisingly useful -- it gives you a score based on sleep, stress, and activity that tells you how much gas is left in the tank. Spoiler: if you have kids under five, the answer is always "not enough."

Now, the tradeoffs. The display is monochrome and utilitarian. This is not an Apple Watch. You are not scrolling Instagram on your wrist or replying to texts with little emojis. If you want a tiny phone on your arm, look elsewhere. But if you want a rugged, reliable fitness tracker that you charge less often than you change your oil, this is the one.

The Garmin Connect app is solid for reviewing your data, though the interface takes some getting used to. And at $399, it is not cheap. But consider that you are buying something you will wear 24/7 for years without babying it. Per-day cost ends up being almost nothing.

My one legitimate complaint: the strap attracts lint like a magnet. That is the worst thing I can say about it.

The Bottom Line
